LPC's Weekly Playlist: NYE for tired 30-somethings

Beginning of the decade:

*blasts "I Gotta Feeling" for the first three years*

End of the decade:

*sobs to Norman Fucking Rockwell! on repeat*

Anyway, these are not bangers. They are songs for people who just want to sit with the appetizers in the kitchen, count down the minutes until they can leave and have the occasional outburst every time they hear a beloved-yet-forgotten song from their youth.

M.I.A. - Bad Girls

OK, we're gonna start things strong with a track that was in every movie trailer from 2012-2015.

Shelia E. - The Glamorous Life

Fun fact: Shelia E. worked with Hans Zimmer on Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman. Another fun fact! I completely forgot Batman v. Superman existed, even though I saw it.

Harry Styles - Sunflower, Vol. 6

This is just the beginning of me forcing Harry Styles' solo career down everyone's throats.

Mariah Carey - Fantasy

ODB VERSION, OBVIOUSLY

Beyonce - Hold Up

Beyonce drags Jay-Z so hard in this song that it should be on every playlist from now until eternity.

Exhibit A:

Let's imagine for a moment that you never made a name for yourself

Or mastered wealth, they had you labeled as a king

Never made it out the cage, still out there movin' in them streets

Never had the baddest woman in the game up in your sheets

Would they be down to ride? No

OH. MY. GOD. SHE DID THAT.

Madness - Our House

This is a song that nobody actually listens to but get excited over when it comes on in a Forever 21. (RIP bb.)

Luscious Jackson - Naked Eye

This was the beloved-yet-forgotten song you're supposed to devote an outburst to.

Queen, David Bowie - Under Pressure

It took me four. 4. FOUR. FOUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! playlists for David Bowie to make an appearance. And the first time he shows up, he has to share the honor. If anyone knows one thing about me, this is a feat of strength only Captain Marvel can rival.

Kiiara - Gold

Added simply for the lyric " And I could leave the party without ever letting you know." Ghost those NYE parties, y'all!

New Order - Blue Monday

I added the version from Wonder Woman 1984 at the bottom because I have never seen a song enhance a trailer better than "Blue Monday."

Kanye West - All of the Lights

My favorite NYE took place a month after My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was released and it was all we listened to that night.

Hole - Heaven Tonight

Remember when this song was in Never Been Kissed and then we grew up and realized what a creepy-ass movie it was but still continued to watch it? Good times.

Rihanna feat. SZA - For Your Consideration

I dropped this in the bottom half in case your party starts to suck and you need some power.

Blur - Song 2

*added specifically to give you middle-school feels*

Lady Gaga - Paparazzi

"Paparazzi" is a better song than "Shallow" I SAID IT.

The Notorious B.I.G. - Juicy

Every party needs at least one white person making everyone else uncomfortable by dancing to Biggie.

Doja Cat - Say So

Look up the TikTok of Laura Dern dancing to this song and then pushing her daughter over.

Eve feat. Gwen Stefani - Let Me Blow Ya Mind

I saw Eve and Gwen perform this song in 2016 and it was very nice for my mental health.

LCD Soundsystem - tonite

In case you want to dance while you cry.

Wonder Woman 1984 soundtrack - Blue Monday

Happy 2020!
